To Catch a Thief (1955)

Greetings. Welcome to Summertime Blues III, "summer of movie watchin'." Let's dive right in:

To Catch a Thief (Hitchcock, 1955)

This was pretty enjoyable, though not nearly as good as some of Hitchcock's other collaborations with Cary Grant (North by Northwest, probably my favorite Hitchcock film, comes to mind). The film is set in France and has a lot of French dialogue and accents that were hard for me to understand. One character seemed to be dubbed over because he had a totally different voice when speaking French versus English. Today we'd subtitle him or something.

Grace Kelly is also in this film, and had some choice dialogue. Screenwriters used to have to be very clever to work around the restrictions regarding sexuality and the like, and often it ends up in really hilarious innuendo and euphemism. See the video below for a nice example.

For some reason, Bernard Herrmann didn't score this film, which was disappointing. His collaborations with Hitchcock are rivaled only by Spielberg/Williams. Incidentally, there was an actor named John Williams in this film.

Is Cary Grant one suave mofo or what?
